The Canuck! (Canadian ex-pat here!) Canadian characters tend to receive a lot of digs in American fiction so thank goodness that didn’t happen here. An example from I Thirst – “Parting with such sweet sorrow, dude!” She seems a lot like me in a lot of ways so I immediately related to her. I used to mix dated and modern phrasing until it drove everyone crazy. I would say Gina Marinello-Sweeney succeeded in combining that and an upbeat POV voice into a story that could’ve so easily become precocious. Rebecca’s POV is especially fun for me because she sounds so much like me a few years ago. The sort of mystical style of story is very, very hard to do well.
